Hvac with Technical Superiority

Featuring Extrordin-Air, LLC
By Fran A. Booth, ABC, Booth Communications, Inc.

Virtually everyone knows the Valley of the Sun is the nerve center for businesses with heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) expertise. And, that expertise is becoming more savvy, sophisticated and high-tech by day.

One of the most cutting-edge companies to emerge to date is Extrordin-Air, LLC, an aggressive, one year-old business that began operations in Scottsdale and recently opened am office in Show Low, Ariz. What makes this company so cutting-edge? For starters, consider the way it developed its name and corporate mark.

According to one of the firm’s three partners and director of operations, Jay Guliano, the company first assembled a bank of prospective names for consideration. Next, a number of focus groups consisting of prospective customers were conducted before a dozen names were identified for log development. Several commercial artists then were hand picked to develop multiple logos that were again focus-grouped before a final choice was made.

“Our builder and contractor customers gave us immediate feedback on the name,” says Guliano. “They liked the name and thought the process we undertook was impressive as well”

A Sleek Look & Feel

The company is the dream-child of partners Jim Heath, manager of the company’s Show Low office; Mike Reuter; and Guliano. Two of the trio had worked prior and all four had interacted with one another through service and sales’ experiences. After forming the company and locating it at 8900 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, four more individuals joined the management team; John Ford serves as director of marketing; Burt Gentry is manager of field operations; Karen Weber is director of client relations; and Michael Younger-Howard is quality service manager.

Initially, Extrordin-Air specialized in HVAC installation and service for high end custom homes. It later expanded its scope to include tract home construction and light commercial customers, adding retrofit and service maintenance to its bevy of service. The Lennox – dealer which also offers additional products to customers – will begin appearing at Arizona home shows to showcase its relation-focused service coupled with squeaky-clean installations that are performed correctly the first time.

In addition to staying true to its vision, the Extrordin-Air team implemented a number of technology-oriented procedures to ensure it was at the top of its game. Before embarking on a service call, Extrordin-Air employees phone customers to ensure they are advised of the arrival time. Upon arrival, technicians don booties and latex gloves to keep the service area neat and clean. Extrordin-Air is the only company of its kind in the state to have the Aereon Solutions wireless service management system. Tapping into the company’s paperless system, technicians generate an invoice on a hand-held computer before downloading information wirelessly to the internet where the Extrordin-Air management team can access it from anywhere in the world. The system automatically updates the dispatch screen to show the managers the technician’s status (in transit, onsite or job completed). Parts and flat rate repairs are scanned from bar codes directly into the computer, eliminating typing and math mistakes. When the job is finished, the customer signs the computer’s screen and receives an invoice from the truck-mounted printer, leaving the error-free information fully and efficiently documented without ever turning in any paperwork.

The HVAC experts rely heavily on the internet and soon will use it to schedule all service calls. In addition, clients will be able to sign up for service calls and maintenance agreements on the company’s website as early as the late fall 2003 or early 2004.

Down the Road

As Extrordin-Air continues to build its business as a mid sized HVAC/service company in bustling metropolitan Phoenix, the Show Low office is focusing on HVAC installation, maintenance and retro-fit for custom homeowners throughout the White Mountain region of approximately 30 towns. The company recently expanded its northeastern Arizona operations with the addition of a plumbing and an electrical division.

Currently, the firm’s early 20 employees are preparing to move to a new location on the west side of Phoenix to be closer to major Valley freeways. Long-term, Extrordin-Air will employ about 75 highly skilled, energetic people, each with his/her own business card for more personal service.

Digitally speaking, Extrordin-Air leads its peers in providing technological excellence while tapping into technology and innovation in a very un-traditional way. And, by all reports, its customers love the convenience and attention to detail. Extraordinary.
